US cement shipments improved by 11% y/y in April 2014

USGS has released its monthly data on cement shipments and the production of clinker in the US from January 2013 through April 2014, as well as cement and clinker imports for April 2014 and the year through April.

In April 2014, total shipments of Portland and blended cement in the US and Puerto Rico stood at 7.4 million t, up by around 11% y/y from the level recorded in April 2013. Shipments for the year through April totalled 23.1 million, an increase of approximately 6% y/y compared to the same period a year earlier. The main Portland cement-producing States in April were Texas, California, Missouri, Florida, and Pennsylvania (in descending order). These accounted for nearly 46% of the country’s total output. The leading consuming States were Texas, California, Florida, Ohio and Illinois (in descending order), which received about 41% of the total shipments in April.

Clinker production reached 5.7 million t in April 2014, up by nearly 3% y/y from the output in April 2013. Production for the year through April totalled 20 million t, an increase of around 4% y/y. The leading clinker-producing States in April were California, Texas, Florida, Missouri and Pennsylvania (in descending order), which accounted for about 49% of total output for the month.

Masonry cement shipments in April 2014 increased by around 11% y/y to 203 000 t. Shipments for the year through April totalled 664 000 t, up by nearly 7% y/y. The leading masonry cement-consuming States were, in descending order, Florida, Texas, California, North Carolina and Georgia, and these received approximately 52% of April’s total shipments.

Imports of cement and clinker in April 2014 stood at 545 000 t, nearly 15% lower than those recorded in April 2013. Imports for the year through April totalled 1.8 million t, down by 3% y/y from the same period in 2013.
