A 40% fall in Qatari cement demand has prompted domestic manufacturers to begin maintenance work on their production facilities. According to local press reports, Mohamed Al Sulaiti, General Manager of Qatar National Cement Company (QNCC), said that the recent sluggish demand has provided an opportunity for the company to carry out necessary maintenance of plant equipment, which will place it in good stead to meet increased demand during the busy season (beginning mid-August).

In other news, QNCC is constructing a fifth facility in Umm Bab. The plant is expected to start production in 2016 and will help the manufacturer to meet the increasing demands of the Qatari construction industry. According to Al Sulaiti, the unit will have a production capacity of 5000 tpd of clinker and 5500 tpd of cement, boosting the company’s overall capacity to 17 000 tpd of clinker and 20 000 tpd of cement. Fives FCB was awarded a turnkey contract for the fifth production line in June 2014. The scope of supply covers all equipment from raw material preparation to dispatch.
