Algerian cement imports were up 30.11 percent, during the first half of 2014, at nearly $283.9 million against $218.19 million last year according to the National Centre for Data Processing and Statistics (CNIS) of the Customs.

The imported quantities of cement reached 3.086 million tonnes in the first six months of 2014 against 2.438 million tonnes in the same period of 2013, increasing by 26.55%.

According to the Ministry of Industrial Development and Investment Promotion, Algeria should be self sufficient in cement within 3 or 4 years, due to stronger domestic production capacity with the launch of a dozen projects of cement plants during the year.

The development of the cement industry has been listed as one of the government’s priorities and they have outlined a plan to reach a production capacity of 20 million tones per year by 2016 and 29 million tones in 2018.

Algeria produces 18 million tonnes of cement per year and imports 2 to 3 million tonnes to meet the local demand estimated at 21 million tonnes per year.
