Kenya’s National Cement, part of the Devki Group, plans to build a KES1.7bn (US$19m) coal-fired power plant to serve its clinker plant and limestone mining operation in Kajiado, Kenya.

The power plant will produce 15MW of electricity and is being seen by the company as a more cost-effective alternative to the national grid. “The cost of procuring electricity from Kenya Power is twice as much when compared with the cost of generating power using coal,” according to National Cement's Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) report for the proposed power plant.
