Coimbatore: After salt, medicines and canteens, city civil engineers have urged the state government to launch Amma cement. Citing rise in cement prices, they have proposed the new Amma commodity.

"The price of cement has risen by 50 in a short period. This has made the real estate market unstable," said a press release issued by the association.

According to the association, there are 7 to 10 cement manufacturers in the state. The association has alleged that the companies have hiked the price as per their will. "There was a committee that monitored cement prices a few years ago. But, when we enquired now, we were told that the committee does not exist," said Ganesh, president of civil engineers association.

The civil engineers association has quoted Rs190 per bag on Monday. The association has also urged the government to implement the scheme as soon as possible to help them revive the market.

According to G Ganesh, president of the association, around 4,500tonnes of cement is sold on an average in Coimbatore. "The sale has decreased this month. Construction has been stalled in some projects due to rise in prices, while those who had planned to begin construction in December, have delayed it," said Ganesh.

The association in its statement said, "Construction is one the largest sectors in the city and is affecting engineers, real estate dealers and labourers."
