Apprenticeship schemes and university degrees offer young people the strongest routes into work, according to David Cameron. During an ‘Ask the Leaders’ event hosted by Sky News and Facebook, the Prime Minister said he is keen to see every young person in the UK gain the opportunity to pursue a university degree or an apprenticeship.

“That is what we should encourage. Then you are going to get more well paid jobs and fewer badly-paid jobs. That is the key for the future,” said Cameron. The Prime Minister noted that people should think about the skills they could acquire in the longer term, rather than purely focusing on the financial benefits of apprenticeships. Furthermore, instead of simply leaving school at the age of 16 or 18, youngsters were encouraged to look at all the training and employment options that are open to them.

Since coming to power in May 2010, Cameron’s coalition government has been keen to promote the values of apprenticeships. After pledging to create two million new apprenticeship opportunities over the 2010 – 2015 Parliament, the government met this target towards the close of last year. The UK construction industry remains firmly committed to apprenticeship schemes, with employers taking on young people in order to tackle skill gaps.
