Despite pleading for a level playing field, local cement makers have not furnished the government with their production costs to enable it act on their complaints.

The Minister for Industry and Trade, Dr Abdallah Kigoda, told the 'Daily News' that local cement producers were asked to provide production costs to enable relevant authorities work out solutions.

"They should furnish us with their cost of production so that we can take further measures," the minister said in an interview noting that they do not know why the local producers were not responding.

The minister said the government has already addressed many problems including inflating production costs and also moved in to curb illegal imports of cement.

The government through its relevant authorities were also keen to ensure the local market is not littered with substandard imported cement, he said.
