With the commissioning of the new Mtwara cement plant in Tanzania by Dangote Cement, Tanzania Ports Authority is expecting to increase capacity at Mtwara Port. TPA has allocated 26 ha to Dangote for the construction of a new jetty as part of expansion plan wherein a further four jetties are being added to Mtwara Port.

Tanzania’s construction sector has grown from being 7% of GDP in 2005/06 to 12.5% of GDP in 2014/15. Another company taking advantage of this burgeoning sector is LafargeHolcim subsidiary Mbeya Cement, which has launched a new higher strength cement to the market. Tembo Supaset 42.5 is the result of almost a year of research and development and is specially formulated to meet the requirements of block makers. Two more products are set to be launched before the end of the year, while the company is also planning the installation of a new vertical roller mill grinding line with 700 000 tpy capacity. This will bring the company’s total capacity to 1.1 million tpy of cement.
