Coinciding with the World Day for Safety and Health at Work celebrations on 28 April, the Association of manufacturers of cement in Spain (Oficemen) took stock of data, confirming significant reductions in accidents, with reductions in numbers of accidents with temporary incapacity, which has dropped 75% over the last 10 years.

In addition, according to the Ministry of Employment and Social Security, accidents in the cement industry are five times less frequent than in the construction sector and four times less than in industry in general. In fact, serious accidents are so rare in the cement sector, the index of gravity is in values 61% lower than the overall industry.

"The industry has spent years struggling to make factories safer, by establishing guidelines and standards, training and safety programs promoting healthy habits and actions of sectoral benchmarking, that increase the level of awareness of workers. Without the commitment of each and every one of them it would not have been possible to achieve these figures. Just keep in mind that the degree of involvement is such that many suggestions are based on the workers themselves and this is what has allowed us to meet the goal of ‘zero accidents’ that many of the factories have held for 5 years", the general director of Oficemen, Aniceto Zaragoza explains.

"However, far from being satisfied with these excellent results from the cement sector we continue to work very actively to maintain this trend of reducing accidents, allocating to it significant resources and efforts, always with an eye to our workers, undoubtedly the main asset of the industry," said Zaragoza.
