Cement consumption in Spain has fallen by 7.5% in May, reaching 965465 t. This figure is 78535 t less than a year ago. As an example of the deep crisis in the sector, this is the lowest figure since May 1965. Cement consumption during the first five months of the year declined 2.7%, with a total of 4 477 604 t, a figure 122 792 less than in the same period of 2015. The cement sector is being punished, particularly "by the absence of measures to promote the recovery of public works, unlike the case in other economic and industrial sectors, which have more institutional support", explains the CEO of Oficemen, Aniceto Zaragoza. "The consumption of cement in public works is now the lowest since the beginning of the historical series 25 years ago," Zaragoza said, adding "it is necessary to reconcile the deficit reduction solutions for economic growth, which does not happen only by the thinning of investment in public works. We talk about basic services, such as maintenance of transport routes, supply and purification of water, hospitals, schools, community centres and so on, without which it can not work or move our society."
