Russia: Basalt Fiber Reinforced Asphalt Concrete

2009-07-14 00:00:00
< P > < FONT face = Verdana > Russia has studied the use of some non-standard basalt fibers and basalt wadding, which are not suitable for chemical enterprises and nuclear power plant construction, as reinforcing components for road construction.

< P > < FONT face = Verdana > The reinforcement efficiency of the road depends to a large extent on the interaction between the polymeric particles and the reinforcing components, which is evaluated by Russian scientific institutes using the capillary lifting method of the polymeric bituminous binder. By studying the interaction between basalt fiber and polymerized asphalt binder, it can be determined that the silica group participates in the chemical bonding of the functional groups of the polymerized asphalt binder, and the silica is first combined with the aromatic oh group and chemically bonded with the asphalt carboxylic acid. Chain-like silicate structure are partially rearranged on that surface of the basalt fib under the influence of the activated functional group of the asphalt binder component to form an organic silicate compound surface, and the basalt fib is bonded with the polymerized asphalt binder. The formation of very active silanol groups — Si — oh. The reorganized silanol groups are the result of the interaction between basalt and asphalt binder. This change is confirmed by spectral analysis. The basalt fibers are orderly arranged in the asphalt binder to form organosilicate compounds, which enhance the structure of asphalt concrete.

< P > < FONT face = Verdana > Adding basalt fiber or wadding to asphalt concrete, up to 0.4% of the mass, can improve the strength of asphalt concrete by 10-30%, and increase its heat resistance and the service life of the road.
