On June 8, the first major national landmark project of the 15th Five-Year Plan, the Three Gorges Waterway New Channel, officially broke ground in Yichang, Hubei Province. The total investment is 77.208 billion yuan, the construction period is 112 months, and the design navigation of 10000-ton ships. This largest comprehensive project on the Yangtze River trunk line after the Three Gorges Project is bringing great development opportunities to the cement industry from the three dimensions of short-term demand, medium-term logistics and long-term pattern. on June 8 shows the construction site of the new channel of the Three Gorges Project. In the
short term, the new channel of the Three Gorges Project includes a new double-line five-step ship lock and an expanded approach channel, with an earthwork excavation volume of about 150 million cubic meters. According to the estimation of relevant institutions, the total demand for concrete of the project is twice that of the original Three Gorges ship lock. According to the calculation of 450 kilograms of cement per cubic meter, the corresponding total demand for cement is about 4.185 million tons, which will give priority to the cement enterprises in Hubei and along the Yangtze River.
In the medium term, the annual throughput of the Three Gorges Ship Lock exceeds 170 million tons, exceeding the design capacity by 70%, with long waiting time for ships and high logistics costs. After the completion of the new channel, the annual throughput capacity of the Three Gorges Project will jump to 336 million tons, 10000-ton ships can reach Chongqing directly, and the waiting time will be reduced from hundreds of hours to one day. For the cement industry, this means that enterprises along the Yangtze River can rely on low-cost water transport to expand the radiation radius, realize "transporting materials from the west to the east, enjoying prices from the east to the west", break the inter-provincial market barriers, and significantly enhance competitiveness.
In the long run, the effect of the new channel is far more than project itself. The logistics efficiency of the Yangtze River Economic Zone has been greatly improved, which will accelerate the landing of supporting infrastructure such as ports, industrial parks and transportation networks along the line, and continue to stimulate the demand for cement. The more far-reaching impact is that the 10000-ton navigation capacity enables cement enterprises along the Yangtze River to export on a large scale, resolve regional overcapacity, promote the industry from "fighting separately" to "coordinating along the Yangtze River", and accelerate the improvement of industrial concentration.
As the "aorta" of the Yangtze River Economic Zone, the new waterway of the Three Gorges is not only a shipping project, but also an "enabling project" for the cement industry. Short-term demand, medium-term cost reduction and efficiency enhancement, and long-term expansion of space will inject new impetus into the high-quality development of the cement industry.
