On October 20, the Iraqi government announced its decision to lift import tariffs on complete solar energy systems. It covers photovoltaic modules , inverters , cables and supporting energy storage lithium batteries .
Reported that the move is aimed at supporting the private sector and encouraging households to switch to renewable energy generation.
It is understood that the initial tariff of the complete solar system (photovoltaic panels, inverters, cables, supporting energy storage lithium batteries) is 33%; by February 2026, the tariff will be reduced to 5%.
Now, eight months later, the Iraqi government has announced the direct abolition of the tariff on the complete solar system. The Iraqi Ministry of Electricity has completed a set of draft regulations governing the connection of solar energy systems to Iraq's national power grid, the

Iraqi News Agency (INA) reported. There are 40 articles in this regulation, which aims to "establish a mechanism for the interconnection of power grids and the exchange of electricity between citizens and the national grid". This means that in the future, citizens can connect their solar energy systems to the national grid through smart meters.
In fact, as early as 2023, the Iraqi government formulated the policy of "making the installed capacity of photovoltaic power plants reach 12 GW by 2030." The proportion of renewable energy generation in total power generation has reached the target of 33% . To this end, the Central Bank of Iraq approved the establishment of a $680 million special fund for renewable energy.
In June this year, Iraq's first solar module production line was officially put into operation, with an annual capacity of about 200 MW, which will be mainly used to produce modules for the Iraqi market. The project is planned to be expanded with the goal of increasing the production capacity to 600MW .
