On August 17, the 17th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD COP17) officially opened in Ulan Bator, the capital of Mongolia. During the conference, Longji Green Energy participated in several side events, systematically expounded the great potential of photovoltaic technology in improving the resilience of global food supply, and Longji officially released the solution of photovoltaic to help food security. by Tsinghua University School of Social Sciences and China Greening Foundation through video link and pointed out that traditional food production is highly dependent on natural photosynthesis and climate. Extreme weather such as droughts and floods has had a strong impact on agricultural production, and global climate change is putting unprecedented pressure on the already fragile food supply system. With the reduction of cost, photovoltaic technology can not only reduce carbon emissions, but also provide a new solution to enhance the resilience of global food supply.
Li Zhenguo recently published a forward-looking viewpoint article "Photovoltaic Technology Helps food security" (Photo voltaics for food security) in the top international academic journal Nature Sustainability. Two technical paths with realistic application prospects are systematically expounded. Path
1: Photovoltaic-driven synthesis of starch from carbon dioxide. Photovoltaic power generation is used to electrolyze water to produce green hydrogen , which is coupled with the captured carbon dioxide to synthesize green methanol, and then converted into starch through oxidation, polymerization and other processes. Compared with the solar energy utilization efficiency of about 2% in traditional natural photosynthesis, this path can increase the efficiency to 7% to 10%. Estimates show that if only 3.7% of the Sahara Desert is used to deploy photovoltaics, 26 trillion kilowatt-hours of green electricity can be generated, enough to synthesize 3 billion tons of food to meet the current food needs of the global population.
The second path : Photovoltaic-driven "energy-water-food" collaborative system. Through the construction of photovoltaic power stations in desert areas, the shading effect of photovoltaic modules can be used to reduce soil moisture evaporation, improve soil microclimate and reduce irrigation demand. Combined with photovoltaic-driven seawater desalination and cross-regional water transmission projects, desert land that is not suitable for cultivation can be gradually transformed into arable farmland.

In fact, Longji has been actively exploring the Kubuqi Desert in Inner Mongolia, China-power generation on the board, planting under the board and breeding between the boards. Under the photovoltaic panels, the once barren land is being revitalized. This practice verifies the feasibility of the integrated development of "photovoltaic + ecology + agriculture", and provides a replicable Chinese scheme for the coordinated development of ecological restoration and grain production in desertification areas. The theme of
this COP17 conference is "Restoring Land and Rekindling Hope". Longji actively participated in many side events, exchanged in-depth with government agencies, scientists and business representatives from all over the world, and shared China's experience in the deep integration of photovoltaic and desertification control and ecological restoration.
From frontier exploration in the laboratory to practical verification in the desert, photovoltaics are moving from energy solutions to the cornerstone of sustainable development.
