Janet Mbene, deputy minister of Ministry of Commerce, said that with the construction of the new cement plant, the annual cement production capacity will climb to 6 million tons in a few years. Last year, cement production in Tanzania edged past 3 million tons, up 18.9% year on year, driven by growing demand. "According to this development situation, Tanzania will also export surplus cement to other countries." Mbene said.

Currently, the three largest cement companies in Tanzania are Tanzania Portland Cement (69.3% owned by Heidelberg), Tanga Cement and Mbeya Cement.

Dangote Group is currently building a cement plant with a capacity of 3 million tons a year.

Earlier, Tanzania, a member of the East African Community (EAC), stopped levying taxes on imported cement to boost domestic supply.
