New anti-seepage materials will be used in the middle route of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project

      Recently, it was learned from Henan Provincial Department of Water Resources that when a new type of waterstop material for concrete deformation joints of channels is filled into concrete joints, the concrete surface can be firmly bonded together, and can withstand the test of concrete expansion and deformation, so as to ensure the strong anti-seepage function of channels. At present, this material named "HBPU Asphalt Polyurethane Hydraulic Concrete Sealing Sealant" has been popularized and applied for two years, and has achieved good results, and will be applied to the canal sealing and seepage control in the middle route of the South-to-North Water Transfer Project, which will start in the second half of this year.

      Jiang Xuexing, director and senior engineer of the Waterproofing Institute of Henan Water Conservancy Research Institute, told reporters that the material is a research achievement of Henan Province's scientific research development project jointly undertaken by Henan Water Conservancy Research Institute and Zhengzhou University, and a research project funded by Henan South-to-North Water Transfer Middle Route Office.

      According to reports, the total length of the canal line of the middle route of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project is more than 1,240 kilometers, and the whole line is lined with plain concrete with a thickness of 8 to 12 centimeters. Hundreds of thousands of deformation joints need to be set up in the whole canal, and the canal line has to pass through special topographic and geological sections such as high filling areas, coal mine goafs, collapsible loess areas and expansive rock and soil areas. Therefore, the canal must have a good anti-seepage function. The deformation joint is one of the main seepage channels of the concrete seepage control canal, and it is the first occurrence point of the disease of the canal seepage control project, so it is of great significance to improve the water stop quality of the concrete deformation joint.

      Jiang Xuexing said that at present, most of the sealing materials used for concrete deformation joints in channels are tar resin mastic (polyvinyl chloride mastic), which is troublesome in construction, unstable in performance, easy to age and toxic, and the Ministry of Construction has been phasing out tar waterproof materials that pollute the environment since 1998. The price of the elastic polysulfide sealant deformation joint sealing material recommended by the International Commission on Irrigation and Drainage is more than 10 times that of the tar resin mastic, and when it is used for hydraulic structure concrete caulking sealing, the bonding surface is easy to crack in humid environment, and the sealing effect is poor. In addition, polyurethane sealant and other materials are also used, but they also have defects such as high cost or poor performance.

      In view of this, Jiang Xuexing led the project team, after more than four years of exploration and research, finally developed an environmentally friendly HBPU asphalt polyurethane hydraulic concrete caulking sealant with excellent performance, low cost and convenient construction, and combined with the actual situation of the site, such as difficult cleaning of the inner surface of the joint, wet joint and so on, developed a feasible construction technology of ZP-1 special primer and caulking sealant.

      According to Jiang Xuexing, the key technology to develop high-performance asphalt polyurethane sealant is how to solve the compatibility problem between polar polyurethane and weak polar petroleum asphalt. Based on the theory of polymer aggregation, polyurethane chemistry and asphalt chemistry, the project team designed the molecular structure and size of polyurethane, fundamentally solved the compatibility problem between polyurethane and petroleum asphalt, and found the ideal production technology route through the research of synthesis method, synthesis process conditions and performance testing.

      The new material passed the achievement appraisal in March 2004. The appraisal experts agreed that the achievement has reached the leading level in China and reached the international advanced level in the performance of hydraulic sealing materials.

      At present, HBPU asphalt polyurethane caulking sealant has passed the pilot-scale production test, and the performance of the pilot-scale product has been tested by the National Center for Quality Supervision, Inspection and Testing of Building Materials Industry and Sealing Materials.
