Recently, Sonnen, a veteran German household storage leader, filed a bankruptcy reorganization application with the court. Sonnen was founded in 2010, and at its peak, it had a 22% share of German household savings, which is the benchmark of European household savings.
In 2019, Shell made a wholly-owned acquisition of 500 million euros, which was supposed to be a strong alliance. However, domestic energy storage manufacturers went to sea to impact the market, and Sonnen's share continued to decline. In 2025, the German market share was only 3.3%, with revenue plummeting and huge losses in successive years.
Shell went on the hunt last year, sold to an investment group in August and went into bankruptcy reorganization just two months later. The company promised to continue serving 150000 existing customers, and interestingly, its American subsidiary doubled its sales and expanded against the trend.
