Recently, the Sudanese authorities said that they had completely exempted tariffs on solar energy systems to alleviate the growing power crisis.
According to local media reports on August 4, the General Administration of Customs of Sudan said that it would fully exempt solar tariffs, reduce the cost of importers and investors, and encourage the development of renewable energy .
Reported that the decision came at a time when the country's Khartoum, Northern and Nile States are suffering from severe power outages. The main transmission line of Merowe Hydropower Station was damaged by fire and stopped operation.
Earlier, on July 15, the Sudan News Agency reported that the Sudan Electricity Regulatory Authority issued a statement clarifying rumors about the import regulations and technical inspection fees for solar energy equipment.
The statement said that the inspection fee is not a new regulation and has been implemented for more than three years. The cost is mainly used to pay for technical inspection and verification of equipment compliance with standards and specifications, and the amount is relatively small compared with the actual value of imported equipment. According to the
Authority, large quantities of second-hand or substandard solar cells and equipment were found to have entered through some border crossings.
Due to the proliferation of inferior equipment, resulting in failure and loss. To that end, the Authority has led the formation of a high-level committee, including the Sudan Organization for Standards and Metrology and other relevant institutions, to develop controls and procedures to ensure the regularization of import operations, strengthen oversight and protect the domestic market.
The above-mentioned committee has adopted a number of regulations on the import of solar energy equipment. It is clearly stated that only new equipment is allowed to be imported and second-hand equipment is prohibited; prior approval of the Electricity Regulatory and Supervision Bureau must be obtained before any electrical equipment is imported or cleared; and all equipment is subject to technical inspection to ensure that it complies with relevant standards and specifications.
